Breakouts may occur from time to time during any stage of life. Persistent breakouts, or acne, may seem to clear before the next flare up begins. Acne is a skin condition in which inflammation occurs subsequent to clogged pores. Pores clog as oil and sebum, a waxy substance, accumulate with dead skin cells within these tiny holes. When pores become clogged, they are the ideal environment for bacteria.

Because of bacteria, pores become inflamed, swollen, red, and sometimes will become filled with infection. Not all acne produces scars. Inflammatory acne in which pores rupture under the pressure of infection, and pimples that are squeezed or popped, may cause temporary or permanent discoloration or scarring.

Acne breakouts have many names, dependent on where they form and on their unique characteristics. What matters more than accurately naming your acne is finding a solution for breakouts so that you can return to a greater level of confidence in your appearance. This problem is not isolated to teens, men and women of all ages can develop acne breakouts, which may occur on the face, neck, chest, back, and buttocks. If acne occurs on a body part that rubs against clothing, the friction can cause further irritation.

I have had acne for over 20 yrs now and have seen several derms over the yrs depending on where I was living at the time and I have to say he is one of my favorite. He is such a sweetheart and takes his time with you so that you never feel rushed, also you always see the Dr. never a PA or just nurse which is what I have found is common in the DC area. His cosmetic procedure prices are great for the area as well! Acne Arlington – right quotation marks are great for the area as well!

The exact cause of acne is still largely unknown, though we do know that hormonal changes can trigger breakouts. This is why teens are most often affected by this condition. Experiences such as menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, oral contraceptives, and stress can all lead to acne flare-ups.

Though acne typically doesn’t pose a risk to health, the emotional effects of persistent breakouts are enormous. At Washington Dermatology Consultants, we help patients from Arlington, Stafford, and surrounding areas develop programs to eliminate and prevent acne based on their skin’s specific needs. Working together, we:

  • Eliminate existing acne. Beginning with a thorough consultation and skin examination, we gain a better understanding of the patient’s lifestyle and overall health. From here, we are able to design an acne-eliminating program tailored to the patient’s needs. We may recommend topical creams or lotions containing retin A, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide for mild to moderate acne. Oral antibiotics may also be incorporated into a treatment plan. Our practices are also equipped with advanced treatment modalities including laser, chemical peels, or other resurfacing procedures.
  • Gain control over future breakouts. We provide ongoing care for our patients through which they learn how to care for their skin at home using products that complement their specific skin type and needs. Products that soothe irritated skin, refine pores, and reduce future flare-ups are recommended.
  • Revise and prevent scarring. Acne that has left permanent marks on the skin has a lasting effect on the patient. We offer a number of treatments to reduce the appearance of existing acne scars. The combination of professional treatment and home care greatly reduces the risk of scarring.

Acne does not have to be accepted as a part of life. Your dermatologist has solutions that will clear your skin and restore a healthy glow you can feel proud of. Contact Washington Dermatology Consultants to learn more about our acne treatments.
