A scar, for one person, may be somewhat of a badge of honor, but a scar for another can be an unpleasant reminder of a past injury. Scars, on a physical level, are just that. On an emotional level, however, a scar can decrease self-esteem, causing one to hide an area of the body. Rather than live with scarring that has a negative impact on your psyche, turn to laser treatment with Dr. Kenneth Neal. Scar revision treatment in our office in Arlington or Stafford can significantly improve the look of your skin.
What is a scar?
When the skin is injured, the body responds accordingly to heal the wound. Scars appear when the healing process is not completely normal. Scars may be atrophic (depressed), or hypertrophic or keloid, both of which are elevated.
Atrophic scars
An atrophic scar may develop when an injury has resulted in a significant removal of tissue. The most common type of atrophic scarring we see is caused by acne. This type of scar may respond well to a variety of non-invasive treatments. Acne scarring, may be treated with laser treatment or IPL. Laser treatment for atrophic scars lead to the smoothing of ridges or bumps, and can flatten the surrounding surface, leading to smoother skin. Treatment is administered with a great deal of precision, planned according to the type, size, location, and color of scar tissue.
Hypertrophic scars and keloids
It is possible to reduce the appearance of a hypertrophic scar or keloid at any time. However, optimal results are achieved when scars are treated earlier rather than later. Various types of lasers are effective at treating specific scar characteristics. Dr. Kenneth Neal is an experienced, board certified dermatologist who designs treatment around the specific needs of each patient’s skin. Some lasers will decrease the physical sensations in a hypertrophic scar, like itching or burning. Others are better at minimizing the appearance of discoloration and pigmentation within the skin.
